TACCIA Empress Maki-e Fountain Pen - Moonlit Falls (Limited Edition)
TACCIA's Empress Maki-e Moonlit Falls opens on a mountain landscape shaped by water, moonlight, and dark lacquer. A waterfall descends from the hills into a quiet pond below, while a golden bird of prey rests within, giving the viewer a deep peek into nocturnal nature.
The composition moves vertically across the TACCIA Empress LE form, from the moon above to the falling water, surrounding hills, and reflective pond beneath. Gold detail and deep lacquer create the contrast of night and illumination, while the bird anchors the lower scene with stillness, watchfulness, and strength. With this piece, Moroike-san has not crafted simply a landscape, but a complete habitat rendered in lacquer and light.
The waterfall uses rankaku, a traditional technique using pieces of quail eggshell to create a finely textured, organic surface. Raised maki-e, togidashi polishing, metallic powders, raden accents, and layered lacquerwork create contrast between the moon, water, hills, and bird, giving each element its own surface character and depth.
The craftsmanship keeps the scene balanced: the waterfall carries texture and movement, the moon gives the composition its quiet glow, and the gold work brings clarity to the bird and surrounding landscape.
These are heirloom, museum-quality works of lacquer art created around the form and function of a fountain pen. Every surface is built through patient handwork, with layers of lacquer, gold, shell, and texture forming images that reveal themselves slowly over time. They are made not only to be written with, but to be preserved, studied, and passed forward as rare examples of Japanese maki-e craftsmanship.
